Diseases In Children
Future issues of toxicological profiles will have five new sections. Each profile will have a section on child health in Chapter 1 (Public Health Statement), which is designed for the lay public. ATSDR also distributes these Public Health Statements separately as a compendium. A section on children’s susceptibility will be added to Chapter 2 and a section on children’s exposure will be added to Chapter 5.
Children’s Health
Adults aren’t the only ones at risk for heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases; increasingly, kids are at risk too. That is why the American Heart Association is working to help kids and families live heart-healthy lives.
Centers For Children’s Environmental Health
The Centers for Children’s Environmental Health and Disease Prevention examine the effect of environmental exposures on children’s health. Through a multidisciplinary research approach including basic, applied, and community-based participatory research, the Centers translate and communicate their findings to clinical and public health professionals and policy makers to alleviate the burden of environmentally induced diseases in children.
Childhood Diseases
This section of the report presents measures of adverse health effects in children that may be influenced by exposures to environmental contaminants. There are many important diseases that affect children, some in which environmental contaminants are known to play a role and others for which the role is unclear. This report focuses on important childhood diseases for which we have nationally representative and readily available data.
Cardiac Diseases
Infection Diseases
The viruses and bacteria that can cause disease are found everywhere. Fortunately, our bodies are equipped to protect us and most often we remain well. Sometimes, however, these viruses and bacteria evade our immune systems and cause illness.
Diseases of the heart can be caused by a variety of factors ranging from viral infections to chromosomal abnormalities and may arise as secondary complications to other diseases or conditions within the body. In most cases, the cause of a cardiac disease is not known.
Protecting Children’s Oral Health
Many people think of periodontal disease as an adult problem. However, studies indicate that nearly all children and adolescents have gingivitis, the first stage of periodontal disease. Advanced forms of periodontal disease are more rare in children than adults, but can occur.
