leucorrhea, commonly known as whites, refers to a whitish discharge from the female genitals. It is an abnormal disease condition of the reproductive organs of women. The condition may continue for weeks or months at a time. If not treated properly in the initial stages, it may become chronic.

In addition to the white discharge, women suffering from Leucorrhea experience weakness. They complain of a dragging sensation in the calves of their legs. The patient could also complain of headaches and become irritable and develop black circles around the eyes.

Leucorrhea Treatment

Directly or indirectly, food habits and a good exercise regime play a very important role in the prevention and cure of this ailment. If one’s blood sugar levels are controlled and consuming the right kind of food, which provides all the necessary vitamins, oligo-elements, fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in the optimum quantity, raises the immunity this condition can be easily overcome. Also, exercise improves the blood circulation and tissue oxygenation, thereby replenishing the energy reserves of the body. A regular bath with warm water and a strong soap can also help in many of the cases where the cause is lack of personal hygiene especially at the muco-cutaneous junctions like the urethra, vagina, anus, and mouth.

One teaspoon of Coriander seed steeped in a glass of water, left overnight, and drank the following morning is also beneficial in the therapy of leucorrhoea. A leucorrhoea-afflicted individual should do this for a week.

Put a few hibiscus rosa-sinensis (shoeflower) in hot ghee and saute for about 5 minutes. Cool the ghee. Take out the flowers. These flowers taken internally can stop excessive bleeding.

Portulaca quadrifida or chickenweed purslane (pasalai keerai) taken internally can cure white discharge (leucorrhea).

Fenugreek seeds are valuable in leucorrhea treatment. They should be taken internally in the form of tea and also used as a douche. For a douche, the solution should be much stronger than tea. Two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds should be put into a litre of cold water and allowed to simmer for half an hour over a low flame. The decoction should then be strained and used as a douche.

Mix 1 cup of water with a cup of milk and boil it. Add 1 tsp of dry ginger (adrak) to it. When this reduces to half add brown sugar to it. Have this for 5-6 weeks.

One of the best remedies is to mix a tsp of the powder of dried amla (gooseberry) seeds and a ripe banana everyday for at least 40 days.

Walnut Leaves: The leaves of the walnut tree contain astringent chemicals. A decoction of the fresh leaves can be beneficially used as a douche in the treatment of leucorrhea.
