HIV

Human Immunodeficiency Virus
or HIV, attacks the immune system of human body and weakens it. Cells which are part of the immune system in a human body resist diseases caused by micro organisms. As the result of HIV, these cells of immune system become incapable of fighting such diseases.
Early Symptoms Of HIV

Appearance of purplish lesions on the skin or inside mouth.

Candidiasis of the esophagus, trachea, bronchi or lungs.

Chronic diarrhea lasting for a month or more.

Red, brown, pink, or purplish blotches on or under the skin or inside the mouth, nose, or eyelids.

People living with HIV may feel and look completely well but their immune systems may nevertheless be damaged. It is important to remember that once someone is infected they can pass on HIV right away, even if they feel healthy.

How Can I Tell If I have HIV?

The first symptoms of HIV infection can resemble symptoms of common cold or flu viruses. The symptoms of early infection can also be similar to the symptoms of other sexually transmitted diseases and other infections such as “mono” or hepatitis, which are much more commonly and more easily transmitted.

Symptoms Of The Immune System

The immune system is the body’s natural defense against invading foreign agents such as viruses and bacteria. HIV attacks the immune system, weakening it and making the body more susceptible to infection.

Treatments Of HIV

HIV Antiretroviral Treatment

This is the main type of treatment for HIV or AIDS. It is not a cure, but it can stop people from becoming ill for many years. The treatment consists of drugs that have to be taken every day for the rest of someone’s life. To understand more about treatment you need to have some basic knowledge of HIV and AIDS.

Drugs ForĀ  HIV/AIDS

As HIV reproduces itself, variants of the virus emerge, including some that are resistant to antiretroviral drugs. Therefore, doctors recommend that people infected with HIV take a combination of antiretroviral drugs known as highly active antiretroviral therapy, or HAART. This strategy, which typically combines drugs from at least two different classes of antiretroviral drugs.

New Drug Treatments

New drugs and types of drugs are being developed all the time. Trials of these treatments are being conducted in specialist HIV/AIDS treatment and research centres.
